Diagnostic assessments

Can someone be with me during the assessment?

Unfortunately, it is not possible for someone to be in the assessment with you. This is due to the regulations which govern diagnostic assessment testing. We always want you to be as comfortable as possible and appreciate that for children or young adults it can be helpful for a parent or carer involved. We encourage parents and carers to help complete the background questionnaire and have an opportunity to ask any questions or share relevant information before or after the actual assessment.

What do I need to bring to my assessment?

If your assessment is remote over video call, you will need to make sure you have:

  • A large tablet, laptop or desktop computer with a strong internet/WIFI signal and suitable microphone, camera and speaker/headphone facilities. Smaller tablets, iPad minis and phones are not acceptable for the diagnostic testing;
  • Access to remote video conferencing (such as zoom/teams) via your device and hardware, which has been downloaded and tested in advance of the assessment;
  • A private, quiet and confidential room for the duration of the assessment;
  • A camera phone, which must remain turned off throughout the assessment, (unless your assessor asks you take photographs of any written work and e-mail these over).
  • A pad of lined paper and a pen

For both remote and face-to-face assessments:

  • Bring any prescription spectacles needed to see fine details when working with materials at a table to the assessment.
Do I need to prepare anything in advance of my assessment?

Before your assessment, we ask you to complete and return the relevant pre-assessment questionnaires, and other relevant information requested by our team. Please don’t worry, you don’t need to do anything else to prepare for your assessment. Your assessor will guide you through the assessment.

What if I need to cancel my assessment?

If you need to cancel your assessment, please let us know as soon as possible to avoid any cancellation costs. You can call or e-mail our friendly Support team on 0113 873 0770 or [email protected].

What if I get cut off during my remote assessment?

If connection is lost in the call, the assessor will contact you over the phone and discuss how to move forward. This can involve, reconnecting to the meeting or sending another meeting link on the same or different platform.

Who can I talk to if I feel nervous about my appointment?

We don’t want you to feel nervous about any part of your experience with us, so please contact our friendly Support team on 0113 873 0770 or [email protected] to let us know how we can help.

What will happen during the assessment?

Your assessor will ask you to complete multiple tasks that help them identify any indicators of a specific learning difficulty, as well as your personal strengths and weaknesses. They are not pass or fail, and you do not need to prepare for them.

What will happen after the assessment:

Allow 10 working days for your assessor to write and send you their report. It will contain a decision about diagnosis and the evidence they used to decide. It will also report any strengths and weaknesses they noticed, and how these impact your work or learning.
